I am Susan Rose April poet, essayist, and visual artist.

Henry David Thoreau, in Walden (1854), writes, “As I came home through the woods with my string of fish, trailing my pole, it being now quite dark, I caught a glimpse of a woodchuck stealing across my path, and felt a strange thrill of savage delight, and was strongly tempted to seize and devour him raw; not that I was hungry then, except for that wildness which he represented.”

This website is that woodchuck. On the surface, it’s a place to learn about me, my writing, art, my creative “work.” But truly, I am grasping for wildness. What is home? What string of fish do I carry? Who measures the pole and why does it trail? Have I shared enough? How will I be judged?

Advice I’ve received: Tell about your influences. Your mission. What makes you unique.

My roots: Thoreau, Kerouac, Dickinson, Joan Didion.

My mission: The knife edge between wildness and tame.

My unique cast: As in fly fishing, knee deep in the Cascapedia River, that’s my secret. But yours to discover.

2024 Is a Wrap

It was—shall we say—an interesting year? Began with the January launch of my author & visual artist website. Yea! Did lots of good writing and work with ongoing workshops and writer groups.
